Earth Day 2021: Crombie’s CommitmentApril 22, 2021
Earth Day, held annually across the globe for over 50 years on April 22, aims to demonstrate support for environmental protection, highlight the impacts of climate change, and activate the environmental movement worldwide. As Crombie evolves, so too does our commitment to our communities, and to the planet at large. As a real estate company, we understand that our properties can have a significant impact on our environment through construction and operations.
Crombie continues to take actions to improve our environmental impact on the communities in which we operate. Our properties are located near their visitors, reducing the need to drive long distances to visit our tenants. Over the past several years, we have increased our focus on improving our carbon footprint and reducing our impact on the environment. For example, in 2018, Cogswell Tower in downtown Halifax became the first commercial building in North America to integrate and control its building management system using the Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, Ecopilot. In collaboration with Empire in 2020, LED retrofits were completed at 147 of our properties across the country. Additionally, Clean St. John's awarded Avalon Mall the Golden Broom Corporate Award in 2020 for composting and recycling initiatives at the property. Sustainable design and construction is also embedded in our development process. Our Davie Street development, for example, adheres to this, and is built to LEED Gold equivalent.
We believe that everyone has a responsibility to do their part and help protect and sustain our planet, and we remain committed to embedding sustainability principles into the way we do business, our decision-making processes, and everyday activities. In order to better understand sustainability performance at Crombie, we are committed to improving the measurement of our baseline performance in all three categories of sustainability (environmental, social, and governance) and advancing our ESG program. Stay tuned for our ESG Report, which will be published in Summer 2021, for more information on this program.
